How to Temporarily Fix a Broken Window

restorations windows

Windows open our living spaces to natural light and ventilation, provide us with outdoor views, and add architectural interest to our homes. But sometimes we take them for granted, particularly if our restoration windows have performed reliably over the years. Old faithful's, let’s call them. But imagine it’s a Saturday, and, as you’re locking up the house for a night out, you think, “Where should we go for dinner?” And then – whack! – a golf ball smacks into your living room window, cracking it in spectacular fashion, and ruining your dinner plans. That’s the moment you can’t take your windows for granted anymore. Now, you need to get your windows fixed – but speedy window repair service at such a late weekend hour is not an option.

Don’t worry. There’s a way to fix a broken window that will keep out the weather and insects until you can arrange a permanent solution. You’ll need a few readily available items:

  • Work gloves
  • Clear packing tape
  • Clear nail polish
  • A tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Thick, clear plastic sheeting
  • A sturdy trash bag
The repair process for a crack

Put on your work gloves and carefully examine the replacement windows pane. If it’s cracked and there’s no glass missing, gently press the cracked area to ensure that the glass isn’t loose enough to fall out. Place a piece of clear tape over the crack. Do this on both sides of the pane and rub the tape to smooth out air bubbles. If you notice a tiny hole or missing pieces of glass near the intersection of cracks, patch the glass with nail polish. With smooth strokes, apply the polish in layers, a small amount at a time. Let the polish dry between coats, and keep applying until the holes are patched.

The repair process for a broken pane

If your damaged window has a hole that’s too large for tape or nail polish, remove loose glass shards carefully using work gloves. Measure the area that needs to be covered. (For optimal safety and security, it’s best to cover the entire broken pane.) Cut a trash bag to size with scissors and cover the broken pane with multiple layers of the bag. Now, tape it into place with clear packing tape. You should cover both sides of the broken pane in this manner.

Another Option

If you need more security or if aesthetics is not an issue, you can board up your window. Simply cover your window with however many pieces of board you need and nail them into the sill or window frame.

For some homeowners, a shattered window provides the perfect reason to replace windows that have been less than satisfactory. In Long Island, Alure Home Improvements offers full-frame window replacement services that will improve your home’s style and energy efficiency. That’s because we offer innovative UltraShield windows in an array of attractive styles, from our low-maintenance double hung to our slim-lined casement. Truth or Dare with Vinyl Windows

When you think about your windows, you might feel your eyes glaze over. Windows aren’t always the most fun topic to every person. So today, let’s make the topic more fun! If you’re trying to decide whether or not it’s time to replace the windows in your St. Louis, MO home, play truth or dare with them and figure out the answer that way! Here’s what you need to do. It will take a little imagination, but it’ll be more fun than just staring at the windows.

Pretend like your windows are issuing you dares and see how they sit with you. Ready? Go!

Window Dare#1: We dare you to go another winter without replacing us!
When you think about sitting through another cold Missouri window with your current windows, how does that feel? Do you shudder at the thought of the drafts that will pour through your windows onto your cold feet? Or do you shrug and think, well okay, I can do that, no problem. If this is a dare you are willing to take, you can hold off on vinyl windows. If you don’t want to even think about taking this dare, get new vinyl windows ASAP.

Window Dare#2: We dare you to try to keep up with your utility bills, no matter what we do to them!
If you utility bills continue to climb, even though you don’t mess with your thermostat much, the windows are probably to blame. The harder your heater and air conditioner work and the more air you lose, the more the bills will cost. If you have plenty of money in the bank, maybe you don’t mind the climbing bills. But really, no one wants to pay for something they can avoid, right? If you’d rather avoid this dare, replace your windows and have the last laugh when the next utility bill rolls through and is much lower.

Window Dare#3: We dare you to decorate around our old style!
This dare can be anywhere from easy to impossible, depending on your tastes. If you want to cover the windows, you can simply get long drapes to place over them and then forget about them. If you want to see out around your house, it’s a bit harder to decorate around old windows. Perhaps consider avoiding this dare by getting new vinyl windows you don’t mind seeing.

Your windows are challenging you, aren’t they! If you have decided you don’t want to take any of these dares, it might be time for replacement windows. And we can help! Call Masonry & Glass Systems Inc. at (314) 535-6515. Our professionals work with windows and a variety of situations on a daily basis. We will give you the advice you need to make the final decision.
